Know your Redundancy Rights

Sometimes it is necessary for employers to make staff redundant and if this happens to you is is worth knowing your redundancy rights to be sure you are treated fairly. Redundency is a form of dismissal from your job, caused  perhaps by your employer needing to reduce the workforce.

Reasons for this can be:

  • New technology or systems have made your job unnecessary.
  • The job you were hired for no longer exists.
  • The need to cut costs means staff numbers must be reduced.
  • The business is closing down or moving.

If you are going to be made redundant, you have the right to be treated fairly by your employer and there are certain steps they are expected to follow. You may also be entitled to a redundancy payment.
